If you're planning to audition for University a major deadline (December 1) already passed, and if you don't even have repertoire learned by now you're far behind. Most auditions ask for a combination of Bach, Mozart, and a French piece so that's the best place to start. Pick something that fits you and is in the realm of your ability on the instrument.)Īnother option would be to play the first movement of one of the Mozart concerti or a slow and fast movement of a Bach Sonata. Don't pick the hardest piece in the book just to "wow" them because if you don't play it well then it won't matter how hard it is. Just thumb through that book and pick one that you feel BEST REPRESENTS YOUR PLAYING. The Paris Concours pieces are great because they are idiomatic for the instrument and let us show off why playing flute is awesome while still giving us room for individual expression. The audition panel will be able to easily ask for particular chunks of it and you'll only need to learn the one piece. I'd recommend something from the French book because they follow the general format of 12 minutes or less and feature a lyrical section and a technical section. Ideally you should look for something that allows you to demonstrate not only your technical ability, but your musicality.
